SSI Science of Diving
Knowing how to dive is one thing, but an in-depth understanding of the why behind it is an essential component for a well-rounded dive education. The SSI Science of Diving program provides an extensive study of physics, physiology, and chemistry and how they affect the human body while scuba diving.
The course also touches on important things to know about the marine environment and takes a closer look into diving equipment. Most divers don’t fully study or delve deeper into these topics until they reach the Divemaster or Instructor level. However we believe this should be mandatory learning for all certified divers – no matter their diving level.
The SSI Science of Diving is a dry course and to make access easy for everyone, we have 3 different instruction options to choose from:
Onsite in-person Instruction
The Science of Diving Specialty can be taken onsite and can fit in around your dives – allowing you to enrich your dive experience without sacrificing time underwater.
Virtual Online-Only Instruction
We offer the Science of Diving completely online for those wishing to learn from the comfort of their own home while on those long surface intervals between dive holidays. This can be done one of two ways:
- Independent Learning: you can purchase the digital kit from us and complete all eLearning and the exam online to earn your certificate completely independently.
- Virtual Classroom Session: complete the eLearning followed by a virtual Zoom session with one of our Instructors to hear their expertise on the subject and delve further into the course materials. Engaging discussions and questions are encouraged.
Each Zoom session will be arranged between the Instructor and the student(s) on a date/time that suits all parties.
Duration: 1/2 day (dry course)
Suitable For: 10+ years old
Prerequisites: Open Water Diver certification or in combination with Open Water Course
Course Materials: digital eLearning
We keep our classes small in order to provide a more personalized learning experience. On average our Science of Diving Course has 2 to 3 students with 4 being the maximum number.
The Science of Diving course is only offered via SSI and upon completion you will receive a digital certification card.
For SSI divers, this cert also counts toward your SSI Advanced Open Water Diver which you get automatically once you have completed any 4 specialties and 24 dives after the OWD.
The Science of diving specialty is required training for most SSI Professional programs, as well as some SSI Extended Range programs.
