By Abdelrahman Shaker

My name is Abdelrahman Shaker, and I am a graduate of the Faculty of Law — though I never worked as a lawyer. Instead, I fell in love with discovery and dedicated my life to exploring both Egypt and the underwater world.

In my twenties, I was doing many things and trying to enjoy every single moment – traveling across Egypt to uncover its hidden gems and organizing trips to explore them. I can easily say, “I can show you a picture of myself anywhere in Egypt.”

Hosieet Dance with swords (Traditional Dance for Beja Tribe), Elba National Park, Halayeb.

At the same time, I was also writing novels and articles, eventually publishing a collection of essays and two novels, with a third on the way. In 2024, I was long-listed for the Katara Prize (Qatar) — one of the most prestigious awards for Arabic literature — for Best Arabic Unpublished Novel.

And, of course, I was also exploring the underwater world, diving in nearly every dive location across Egypt. So when it was time to settle down and focus on one passion, I chose scuba diving.

Why I Chose Diving

My first dive was an introductory dive in June 2015 in Sharm El Sheikh. I still remember holding the line, afraid, and insisting we end the dive before it even began – but I pushed through. The moment I descended, I fell in love with the ocean. I even asked if I could dive again that same day (sadly, it wasn’t possible).

That experience ignited something in me. I wanted to dive again and again. The following year, I did two more introductory dives – until I realized I wanted to go further.

In 2016, I began my diving courses, and by the end of 2017, I was a Divemaster, guiding certified divers in Dahab.

In 2021, I became a scuba instructor and discovered the incredible joy of teaching — from helping someone take their first breath underwater to training advanced divers, rescue divers, and divemasters.

My Life in Diving

Now, after about nine years of professional diving and five years of teaching, I’ve logged over 3,500 dives (though I’ve never really counted!) and have taught more than 300 courses across PADI and SSI.

Today, I am proud to work at Scuba Seekers as a Scuba Diving Instructor (PADI MSDT & SSI AOWI).

While I will never stop writing or traveling to show people the real Egypt, diving remains my greatest passion. Join me at Scuba Seekers – let’s go for a dive together, share stories, and explore what’s next for you.

But like a fish, you’ll have to come find me in the water!
