DIVE AGAINST DEBRIS

Dive Against Debris

Give back to the sea

It’s no secret – each year tens of thousands of marine animals and seabirds die from eating or getting tangled up in trash in the ocean. This marine debris is known to devastate habitats (both underwater and onshore), enter the food chain of aquatic life (in turn showing up in our own digestive systems), and litter once-untouched and pristine coastal areas.

According to Project AWARE, a global movement for ocean protection, 70% of the rubbish entering our ocean sinks to the seafloor. Enter the Dive Against Debris Program – an initiative created by Project AWARE that harnesses the power of divers and uses their love of the ocean to help tackle the underwater marine debris problem. Scuba Seekers is proud to support this worldwide citizen science project by conducting weekly clean-up dives at our precious house reef.

How Our Dive Against Debris Works
  • meet at Scuba Seekers dive center in Dahab at 09:30am
  • we provide tanks, weights, and mesh bags so all you have to do is bring yourself and your dive equipment (equipment rental is available)
  • our dive starts at the Mashraba dive site by the bridge and lasts 45-50 minutes
  • separate and sort all collected debris after the dive so we can identify Dahab’s largest sources of marine pollutants
  • end with a coffee and brainstorm session on effective solutions we can implement locally to stop the litter at the source
  • Scuba Seekers submits all data to Project AWARE to help raise awareness and inform local policy change
