GUE RECREATIONAL COURSES
GUE RECREATIONAL COURSES
BEGIN WITH THE END IN MIND
Scuba diving immerses you in the underwater world, giving you a fish-eye view of the Earth’s largest ecosystem.
Embark on an exciting adventure and push your boundaries with GUE’s range of beginner certification programs. Each course is designed to strengthen your in-water control and confidence, and to develop your independence as a new diver.
GUE REC 1
GUE’s Rec 1 Open Water is the entry level scuba diving course for those learning to dive for the first time.
Students will be introduced to the GUE training method – from basic underwater body positioning and kicking techniques, to more complex elements such as equipment configuration, trim, buoyancy, situational awareness and team diving. All skills are first introduced in the classroom before being demonstrated and practiced on land and then repeated in the water.
During the course you will practice your skills while neutrally buoyant and in the trim position and will practice as many times as needed to refine and finally master them. This is a process that takes time and is based on your day-by-day personal progression, spending as much time in the water as necessary.
The Rec 1 Open Water course will help you cultivate a platform that supports comfort, confidence, and competence in the water and will prepare you for more advanced training.
Upon successful completion, divers will be certified to dive to a maximum depth of 21m.
Duration: 5-6 days, at least 6 open water dives
Maximum Depth: 21m
Class Size: max. 3 students
Applicants for the GUE Rec 1 (Open Water Diver) must:
- be 12+ years old
- be a non-smoker
- be able to swim
- full list of course prerequisites here
All dive training will take place directly in the sea in one of our protected bays at Lighthouse and/or Mashraba.
You can find our full GUE course schedule here.
GUE REC 2
If you are looking for more advanced diving adventures, the GUE Rec 2 is your next step.
GUE’s Rec 2 Advanced course is essentially 3 courses in one – Navigation, Rescue and Deep. You will strengthen the skills you already learned during you Rec 1 (Open Water) while learning new ones such as:
- underwater compass and natural navigation techniques
- how to plan dives to 30m using nitrox 32 or triox 30/30
- how to manage ascents from deeper depths
- rescue techniques to help a team member in distress
- light communication and other protocols for diving at night or in low visibility conditions
The Rec 2 course is normally conducted over 6 days. If you’re short on time or prefer to break up the course over a longer period – it can be divided into 3 separate Primers: Navigation Primer, Rescue Primer and Deep Primer. Once all 3 primers have been successfully completed you will be Rec 2 (Advanced Diver) certified.
Duration: 6 days, 11 dives
Maximum Depth: 30m
Class Size: max. 3 students
Applicants for GUE Rec 2 (Advanced Diver) must:
- be 16+ years old
- be a non-smoker
- be able to swim
- have passed the GUE Open Water (Recreational Diver 1), GUE Performance Diver, or GUE Fundamentals course
- have logged at least 15 non-training dives
- have completed EFR/basic life support (BLS) training from a recognized training agency within 24 months prior to the start of the class
- if using doubles during the course, have conducted at least 15 non-training dives in the GUE double tank configuration or have conducted 10 dives utilizing doubles following completion of GUE Doubles Primer certification
- if using a drysuit during the course, have conducted at least 15 non-training dives in a drysuit or have conducted 10 non-training dives utilizing a drysuit following completion of GUE Drysuit Primer certification
- full list of course prerequisites here
All dive training will take place directly in the sea in one of our protected bays at Lighthouse and/or Mashraba. Once you gain control of new skills you may visit different dive sites at the Instructor’s discretion.

GUE Rec 3
GUE’s Rec 3 is an intermediate level course bridging recreational and technical diving. It will take you to depths that require more skill and advanced breathing mixtures. You will learn:
- to safely dive up to the full recreational depth limit (40m)
- limited decompression
- use of doubles and one stage cylinder
- use of nitrox for decompression
- use of normoxic Helium (30/30 and 21/35) to minimize narcosis, CO2, gas density, and post-dive “nitrogen stress”
- basic regulator/manifold failure procedures
The main goal of this course is to develop divers for scientific and project diving. If what you really want is to dive deeper than 40m you should consider technical dive training. While you don’t really need to be a Rec 3 Master Diver to enroll in the GUE Tech 1 course, some divers find it to be a very beneficial step in that direction.
Duration: 5 days, 8 dives
Maximum Depth: 40m
Class Size: max. 3 students
Applicants for the GUE Rec 3 (Master Diver) must:
- be 18+ years old
- be a non-smoker
- be able to swim
- have passed the GUE Rec 2 (Advanced Diver) course or a GUE Fundamentals course
- have a minimum of 75 non-training dives, 25 of which must have been after passing GUE Fundamentals or GUE Rec 2 (Advanced)
- have completed 15 non-training dives using doubles, or have completed GUE Doubles Primer course followed by 10 non-training dives using doubles
